HISTORY OF INNER WHEEL IN
INDIA
The first Inner Wheel Club in India was formed in 1955 in Ahmedabad.
When in 1968 the first International Inner Wheel President came to
India, there were three Inner Wheel Districts - Gujrat, Saurashtra and
Bombay. The I.I.W. President combined them and named it as National
Council of India.
With the expansion of Inner Wheel Clubs and Districts in India, in
the year 1976 the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs of India and Sri
Lanka was established. Later on, on 1st July 1985 Sri Lanka separated
out and Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India was formed.
A Few Important Facts
- 10th January 1924 - The inaugural meeting of Manchestar
Club (Great Britain) was held in Herriots.
- Baths when the name "Inner Wheel" was adopted. Mrs.
Oliver Golding was the founder president and Mrs. Nixon as
secretary. The first 6 rules were agreed upon.
- 10th January is now celebrated as the International Inner
Wheel Day.
- 1931 - The first overseas club was founded in Ballarat
Australia.
- 1934 - The Association of I.W. clubs in Great Britain
& Ireland was formed & rapidly became a global movement.
- Since 1936 - Newly formed Inner Wheel Clubs were given a
Certificate of Membership of "The Charter".
- 1955 - Inner Wheel came in India with formation of I.W.
Club of Ahmedabad as Dist. - 75 now Dist. 305.
- 1966 - Malti Rana was appointed the first IIW
representative.
- 1st July 1967 - I.I.W. came into being. The first board
meeting was held in Copenhagen. Five board members were present from
Denmark, G.B. & I Netherlands, Norway & Sweden.
- Lavender Weightman became the first I.I.W. President & came to
India in 1968 - combined 3 districts of Gujrat, Saurashtra and
Bombay and named in National Council of India.
- 1976 - The Association of I.W. Club in India, Sri Lanka
& Bangladesh was formed. Raksha Mehta (Dist. 314) was the first
president.
- 1977 - The first conference of the Association was held in
Bombay. Sri Lanka & Bangladesh are no longer in Association of
I.W. Clubs in India. This is now the second largest association
after G.B. & I.
- 1986-87 - Mina Kapur was the first Indian lady to honour
the highest office of I.I.W. President.
- 1993-94 - Anita Aggrwal became the second Indian lady to
honour the highest office of I.I.W. President.
AN EARLY HISTORY OF INNER
WHEEL CLUB OF BHUBANESWAR
Even before the IWC was chartered on 2nd February 1987 No.3404, the R'Anns of Bhubaneswar Rotary Club were organised and functioning under the banner of "Ladies Club", which was formed in 1976-77.
The club was subsequently renamed as 'Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar' in 1984-85 under the Presidentship of Dr. Mrs. Deepa Padhi.
With a view to obtain the charter for the Inner Wheel Club the preliminary meeting took place on 10.7.86 at the then President Smt. Sarojini Ray's residence.
The then District Governor nominee Rtn. Dr. Sreenivasa Sahu while attending District Assembly 3260 at Raipur on 13th and 14th June 1987, received the International Charter of the Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar from the then District chairman Smt. Rachel Reginald.
The Charter Presentation ceremony took place in the premises of Bhubaneswar Club on 29th June'87. The Chief guest of the function was the then DGN Dr. Sreenivasa Sahu.
The Chief guest presented the charter to the President Sarojini Ray and Secretary Dr. Sabita Mishra in the presence of PP Rtn R.L Banerjee who addressed the Club on behalf of the Rotarians.
IMPORTANT VISITS
Before the Club was chartered Mrs. Rachel Reginald Dist. Chairman I W Dist- 326, paid a visit to the IWC of Bhubaneswar on 6th Nov 1986. She was accorded a warm welcome at the Airport by Inner Wheel members and was taken around the adopted village Dhauli. She was impressed by the training classes given to the village girls in plastic weaving. She addressed Club members under the leadership of President Sarojini Ray and Secretary Dr. Sabita Mishra. R'Ann Smt. Rani Singh hosted a dinner at her residence in her honour.
R.I President Mat Caparas along with First Lady Nita Caparas accompanied by then Past R.I. Director Raja Sahoo (subsequently R.I President) visited Bhubaneswar on 15th and 16th Jan 1987. This was first ever visit of any R.I President to this region. On the occasion, the Inner Wheel Club presented a sewing machine to the Mahila Samiti in the adopted village Dhauli. The dignitaries also visited the plastic weaving centre.

Activity
The Inner Wheel Club successfully organised the annual 'FETE' on 13-12-86 and the net income was Rs.18,300.00
The second Inner Wheel Dist. Conference I W Dist- 326 took place at Bhubaneswar on 15th Feb'87 hosted by Inner wheel Club Bhubaneswar. Ann rani Singh was the chairman of the Dist. Conference. I Dist chairman Rachel Reginald presided over the conference. Prof. and Head of English- Utkal University was the Chief guest. It was a large gathering well attended by members and Rotarians.
A landmark in the early history of Inner Wheel Club was, hosting of the "Association meeting of the Inner Wheel Clubs of India" and "District executive meeting of I W District 326" on 9th Oct 1991 under the leadership of President Sandhya Patnaik and Secretary Dipti Ray. Ass. President Smt. Asha Bajaj and Dist. Chairman Anjali Deshpande along with other members graced this occassion.
From the very beginning Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar has been making a very strong presence, in the community in and around Bhubaneswar with dedicated service in the fields of Health, plantation, disaster relief, service to handicapped, financial, assistance to meritorious students, besides participating in all Rotary activities.
Today the Club proudly claim an identity of its own. On the pillar of dedicated service rendered by all members projects undertaken by the club are
- Conducting regular health check-up camps.
- Blood donation camps.
- Creating awareness on Polio, AIDS, Cancer, Anti-drugs.
- Providing vocational training.
- Protecting environment through Plantation projects.
- Aids to physically and mentally challenged.
- Providing relief during Natural calamities.
- Welfare programmes for female inmates of jails.
- Providing permanent Rest shed for Unit-9 Bus Commuters.
- Providing for Adopted village at Siripur Sabar Sahi at Unit-8.
